NWS Skywarn Spotter
SKYWARN™ is a national network of volunteer severe weather spotters. The spotters
are trained by local National Weather Service Forecast Offices on how to spot severe
thunderstorms, tornadoes, hail and flooding. In some parts of the country, spotters
also report snowfall and ice accumulation.
Typically I am monitoring during severe weather on the Stafford Area Radio Association on the 145.270 Amateur Radio
Repeater. The repeater is located on the corner of Route 610 and Shelton Shop Road
in the Stafford, Virginia. Its coverage extends mostly North and South from Richmond
to Washington D.C, It Extends from King George County, East to Culpepper and almost
Charlottesville to the West.
If I see any signs of severe weather I report that immediatly to the Net Control.
The net controll will forward the messages to our higher W4LWX a SKYWARN Net Control
out on the 147.300 repeater
in Sterling, Virginia. The control operator has a desk right there at the NWS Sterling Office (LWX). We also have a desk beside Sheriff
Jett's office at the County's Emergency Operation Center.
